Design exercise: “Would you be interested in helping us create a cool and shady courtyard garden that reminds me of growing up in Maine, and things I loved when I lived in Japan, but doesn’t require much water, that’ll survive in the salty Venice Beach sand, that’ll bring in pollinators, that has a gnarled twisting tree arching through it? It’s a really important space because it’s the first thing you see when you come into the house. Also, I’m an architect and I designed the house, and we’re moving in in a few weeks.”
